A MOMENT OF CALM IN THE DYNAMIC MARKTHAL:
ONE HUNDRED RESTROOMS IS OPEN

Rotterdam, Monday, October 14, 2024 – Yesterday marked the official opening of ONE HUNDRED restrooms in the largest indoor food hall in the Netherlands: Markthal in Rotterdam. Located at the familiar spot near the escalators, ONE HUNDRED restrooms has introduced new unisex toilet facilities, designed to stimulate all the senses and offer a moment of calm in the dynamic food hall.

The restrooms were officially opened by Evert Vrijenhoek, shopping center manager of Markthal, together with Mariëlle Romeijn and Bram Gleichman, co-founders of ONE HUNDRED restrooms. Markthal is the fourth shopping mall of Klépierre, after Hoog Catharijne (NL), Maremagnum (ES), L’Esplanade (BE), and Alexandrium (NL), that partnered up with ONE HUNDRED.

A test panel of five remarkable Rotterdammers was invited to test the new concept on the morning of the opening. Despite Rotterdam’s down-to-earth attitude, the new restroom experience was well received—Rotterdammers love innovation!

Mariëlle Romeijn explains: “Finally, a ONE HUNDRED in my own city! As a Rotterdammer, I’ve always been proud of the Markthal, but the restroom experience could be more innovative and multisensory. That’s exactly what we aim to tackle with ONE HUNDRED. Especially in a dynamic environment like the Markthal, it’s wonderful to have a moment to relax and recharge.”

With relaxing music, pleasant scents, and atmospheric lighting, visitors can take a moment to unwind and then return feeling fully ‘zen’ to enjoy all the culinary delights and their company.

Evert Vrijenhoek says: “Over the past ten years, Markthal has proven itself as the food spot where people and global cuisines come together. Our architectural masterpiece in the heart of Rotterdam has become an integral part of the city’s skyline. The innovative concept of ONE HUNDRED fits perfectly here.”

Well-being services

Visitors enter the Reload Zone, where they can immediately use the free health check that measures blood pressure, BMI, and temperature. A sense of well-being is enhanced by indirect lighting, pleasant scents, comfortable furnishings, and nature sounds. In the toilet cabins, mind-boosting music from the mood music app Sines can be heard. The toilets are also fully equipped with touchless solutions and water-saving flush systems. Additionally, special tactile communication is available for the visually impaired.

Starting in November, visitors will also receive attractive discounts from various Markthal vendors upon presenting their toilet ticket. The goal of all well-being services is to offer a brief moment of self-care.

The comfort crew is present during opening hours to welcome visitors and keep the sanitary areas continuously clean. ONE HUNDRED also provides a separate space for visitors with disabilities and families with children, including a baby changing table and a play area where the little ones can be changed and cared for in peace.

Visitors to ONE HUNDRED pay €1.20 for their restroom visit, and in return, they receive a clean, touchless toilet experience with additional well-being services. Starting in November, they can also enjoy voucher discounts. Additionally, visitors will find a QR code in the Markthal’s anniversary Foodiebag, allowing them to test the new restroom experience for free until October 21, 2024.

“Our concept is designed to provide as much value as possible for the visitor, making a visit to ONE HUNDRED a great deal. Our high ratings and rapid growth in Europe show that this formula works,” says Bram Gleichman, co-founder and CCO of ONE HUNDRED restrooms.
